Bangalore 24th July, 2020: Indian racer Akhil Rabindra who became the only Asian in 2019 to bag a place with the prestigiousAston Martin Racing (AMR) Driver Academy will continue to build on his strong last season in Europe in 2020. The Bangalore based driver who drives the Aston Martin Vantage GT4, will continue his journey at the AMR Driver Academy with 11 other elite drivers from across USA and Europe, as announced today.
The selected drivers would undergo a year of training and assessment with the AMR team in the United Kingdom. At the end of the calendar year the best performer will land a contract of a junior driver in 2021, with the factory Aston Martin Racing team.
“I am extremely excited and delighted to be on the AMR Driver Academy again this year. Last year was a very strong year where I went from strength to strength. This year my focus is to build further on last year’s success and get the junior contract at the end of the year. I look forward to the season starting and getting on the podium again,” said Akhil Rabindra on securing his consecutive season with the AMR Driver Academy.
Akhil who competed in 2019 European GT4 Championship with PROsport Performance finished his season with a total of four podiums including the first ever podium for the brand-new AMR Vantage GT4 in Mugello. Akhil’s debut race with the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 happened at the United States where he put up a strong performance in the qualification races. His qualification pole position and P3 in Road Atlanta and Road America respectively was an ideal showcase to the amount of talent he has and a clear indication of his potential.
In 2019 Akhil also secured a 2nd place finish in the 24H GT Series European, held at the Mugello Circuit Italy, in March which was followed by a win at the 2019 24H GT Series European at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps Belgium a month later. Thereafter Rabindra managed to get two more podium finishes- a 2nd place in Race-1 of the GT4 European Series at Brands Hatch UK in May and a 3rd place in the GT4 class at the 2019 24H GT Series European held at the Brno Circuit in Czech Republic.
Given international motorsports season came to a halt earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, it will be interesting to see what Akhil has in plan to start his racing calendar this year.
